At a recent festival on a S. CA college campus, Captain Ahab was unplugged, not by the promoter, but by a very upset young lady. Despite having a large crowd of wildly dancing kids, the lady announced to the audience, “I’m so sorry you’ve been subjected to this misogyny.” Then another lady came up to the stage and started arguing with her about the nature of irony, trying to defend Captain Ahab. Of course, with songs as blatantly homoerotic as they are misogenist, this arguement may just have been entirely off the mark.
Captain Ahab left the stage only to be confronted by an older lady, at the event with her children. “How dare you perform such music in front of children! Don’t you feel any sense of artist responsibility?” she asked. Jonathan, singer for Captain Ahab, replied, “Oh, I see, you have me mistaken for an artist. I’m an entertainer.”
With slews of ravesploitation bands coming out of LA lately (see Explogasm, Anavan, Totally Radd!, etc) it is quite an accomplishment that Captain Ahab continues to provoke people in this manner. Of course, Ahab is also about being a reflection of all genres of electronic music, for better or worse ~ and not just the naughty ones. But on this 12” the focus definitely is Captain Ahab’s naughty music. It is what makes the kids happy.
